Help on back up heating and cooking tools please.

I watched his link and was really impressed with what he found. The guy in the video said he got his at some sort of an outlet I think. I found the one you posted a link to at Cabela's. It sorta looks the same but when I was reading the product details there were big limitations in the types of fuel we could use. Colemans overstock or some site like that had the Yukon m1950 brotherscoobs found only they were sold out.... probably because of the video. I had my husband take a look and he felt the Yukon was the better value. I'm pretty sure I saw them on Amazon and eBay so maybe try there?

what are you running for heat when the shtf? I also think the yukon is the best heater, problem is its pretty sold out every where. Im looking into a surplus store now.

We're more worried about water because our well is pretty deep and it already went dry once after they built a peaker plant nearby so we haven't gotten into heat yet.... it's gonna be a problem. We do have three fireplaces.... one with glass front doors and we did just order glass doors for another one. The one that already has the glass front doors does have a heatilator unit but that requires electricity to push the air into the room so..... that'll be useless in high efficiency mode with no electricity. We've decided we'd like a cook stove insert type deal for the one in the family room and I'm leaning toward this unit, [FONT=&quot]Mountaineer Wood Stove - VG650ELG [/FONT]but.... I haven't even shared it with my husband yet and neither one of us have checked into airtight units for a fireplace so that one I found might not even work for us. We've been ordering cords of wood here and there when we think of it. We've probably got about 15 cords out there now and I should order more.... just in case. We never use the fireplaces except sometimes the one in the family room when we have get togethers with family. We pretty much live in the family room and the kitchen so adding something to that fireplace should be enough with an extra unit like that Yukon venting out a window in the kitchen. The kitchen does have ceramic tile so that's a help. I dunno what we'll end up with but I know I'm liking that Yukon so that one's probably a slam dunk especially for the price and considering how many different types of fuel it can use and... it's portable.

I hear you on the water, I have no sources around here to get it and use a berkley, ( will do rain water if need be or snow) I hope to have 400 gallons of stored water by summer and so far I have a 55 gallon barrel ( got it at the local pepsi plant, 15 cases of water ( will have 50 of these. ) five gallon barrels and so forth. UGH so much water LOL

The water's really upsetting me. I do collect rain water religiously though. I've got a boatload or rainbarrels at the ends of our downspouts so that's a big help. Do you have any soccer fields around you? If you do.... see if they've got any extra 50 gallon barrels. I forget what product they buy for soccer fields that comes in the 50 gallon barrels but I took a label once and the contents were acceptable to me (I'm very picky) at the time so they've been setting them aside for me. I've been bringing them home and passing them out to friends and neighbors. Maybe you could call around? Take some chainsaw classes and volunteer for an invasive species work day somewhere. Spend 3 hours and come home with a trailer full of firewood. That sawtooth oak burns niiiiiiiiiiice.

I live in **** town america, no soccer fields, heck nothing much of anything concerning sports or anything for that matter. this town sucks, but its small ( 39,000) so safer then new york LOL but its boring, cold as heck and boring. I am filling my barrels with good water, storing it in my basement and storing it in my garage this summer in case it happens before next winter. I will empty the barrels out in the garage 2 times before winter again. the problem is here we get very cold, right now its 7 below . tonight -17 ugh.

Could be a lot worse.... you could live an hour north of Chicago and an hour south of Milwaukee in a bedroom community surrounded by horses, GE soy, GE corn and....coming to a "field" near most of us real soon.... GE alfalfa. You have no idea what they spray on these crops throughout the season to keep yields up that sorta drifts in but.... I don't even want to think about what's gonna drift in from the bowels of Chicago if those folk ever get shut off from power. They won't exactly all be running for those "oh so welcoming" FEMA camps. Can we say sitting duck if the power ever goes out for any extended period of time in my town>>>>? Wanna swap properties?

YIKES !! I see what you mean, well you and the family are welcome here. sounds like you know what your doing and with just me and the kids, well we are like sitting ducks to until I can find a good honest source in helping me get a pistola. You live in a very populated state, montana is pretty empty, but then more sitting ducks to the zombie killers. ( reading lights out LOL )

Fooled you.... I don't know what I'm doing. I'm pulling a Buzz Lightyear... I'm not flying.... I'm falling with style. What a sweetie you are and it sure is beautiful in Montana and.... there's still some semblance of community left in that state. Added bonus for me would be that you were a hairdresser and you know how to use peroxide so maybe you could make my gray go blond..... just kidding. I can't help you with a pistola.... I'm still working on a small bb gun to kill chickens and rabbits for myself. Am I in trouble or what!!!

What might be the best option for a supplemental heating system for me, might not be your best option.

Our primary, short term and long term supplemental heating is our woodstove and pellet stove. Our home was built with electrical baseboard heat that I have yet to change over to hydronic heat, darn failing economy isn't helping. The pellet stove will only work for as long as I can keep the generator running or I run out of ways to charge 12 volt vehicle batteries. My pellet stove will run on 120 volt and 12 volt.

IMO, propane or natural gas is not a viable option for a long term SHTF scenario. Natural gas will only flow through the piping for as long as the utility company can keep up the pressure. Propane-fired appliances are an option, if a person has a generator and enough fuel to operate it for the electrical controls and can store enough propane to last a year or two.

One thing I do know about propane-fired appliances is they are not inexpensive to operate, at least when compared to natural gas. However, in remote areas natural gas is usually not even an option. My comments about propane not being inexpensive is based on feedback from home owners that I have installed gas piping at. Maybe propane is cheaper in other parts of the country, I do not know.

Are you looking for short term or long term supplemental heating options or both?

Is wood readily available?

What are others using in your area for primary/supplemental heat?

I know I'm missing something to ask but can't think of it at the moment.

Ok here goes, I rent do not own my home, have rented it for the last 6 years and its not mine but the governments. they will never allow a wood stove put in,( THERE LAWS i GUESS FOR THE SAFETY FACTOR) so thats why I can not have the pipe through the roof. I have hot water heating, ( big boiler in the basement)
yes wood is currently easy to get, I just got 2 cords more for my parents ( who have already 10 cords)and can get all i want and there for need to know how to do a wood stove I can add with out drilling holes in the roof LOL
no I can not add a huge propane tank to my yard either, Im sure they will notice that and flip out. I figure when SHTF they will not even bother me to check since they have many homes and over 700 apartments in 4 different locations around town. heck I can hardly get them to come now and fix anything LOL. but I can not be caught with a wood stove at this point in time as I can not loose my home!
I liked the looks and the fact this stove has a perfect rating, but wonder how to hook it up going through a window. I really need expert advice.

Heatiing and cooking

WE have -45 degree f temps in the winter here and it does not take long with the power out to freeze the water pipes. We have two generators one small one for the boiler oil fired supplying heat and hot water to the 4 apartments. We also have a larger one that we run just to get water from the well it is 220 volts. we run this one about 1 to 1.5 hrs a day. We have a 1000gal propane tank in the yard that will run the 4 stoves and clothes dryer for about a year.

This is an issue for us, as well. We are on the power grid and rely on gas to heat our home and a gas fireplace. We do have a well and septic system of our own. But we do need to get alternate ways of getting the water up (generator or handpump) in case of power outage. We also plan to get some water barrels and I think I've found some on Craigslist for a decent price.

My husband said we should be able to rig up something wood burning for long term SHTF scenario if we yank the gas fireplace out and put in a small wood stove. I don't know how practical this is? We re-built the home ourselves, so he knows the venting is okay, etc. We just need to pick up some kind of small unit that we can possible cook on.

Our other plan is propane cooking outdoors and a wood fire pit outdoors for dutch oven cooking. That's pretty much all we've come up with.

We live just on the edge of town on .25 acre. I know we can do more than we are. But without a garage or basement, things get a little tricky.

Puttinga wood stove in would surly fix you in heat and cooking indoors. I would say you want to not cook out doors as the fumes being so close to town will invite trouble.

You'll need a source of wood. It's gone up to $135 a face cord around me. Last summer it was only $65 a cord.
