important thing you have not gotten done?

Here is mine..
I have not gotten a heat source yet and am trying my darndest to figure it out since its so darn cold here and winter lasts 8 months UGH
I am doing 2 choices, one is this stove... and ordering 2 cords of dry wood ( we will work all summer in getting it to small size kindling)

and this

I have started buying propane like crazy, got 2 of the 20 pound tanks and so far 5 small cans. I plan on having several more 20 gallon tanks, and lots and lots more propane cylinders.

I have a big problem with the heat, it gets 40 below here and does quit often through out the winter here, which starts in October and goes until June some years UGH

Wood Stove = Solid Choice

We bought one that has over 25 years on it. I can't count the number of times that we have pat ourselves on the back for making such a good decision.

Get the best quality/durable stove that you can buy; you will not regret it.

That top one, you will need to repaint with a high temperature grill paint. The up side to that model is it has an optional water heating tank, flat top for cooking, and has side carry handles if it need to be moved. Downside is you have to feed it wood and it makes smoke/smell that can be detected day or night (smell mostly @ night).

The bottom one is just a heater. It is small, stores easily and is lightweight. It's downside is that it needs to be fed 1# bottles of propane and IIRC it burns about 1 every 8 hours on medium high. Again IIRC, there are aftermarket adapters that allow you to run any appliance that would use 1# canisters from a 20# tank.

As with anything YMMV, personally I'd go with #1, as i is a lot more versatile and it does not use specialized fuel or canisters. It eats trees and makes heat, hot meals, water, dries wet socks etc...

I figure the wood stove will be good during the day, and we will go with out heat at night or very little. I know there is a wood smell, but not much one can do in order to keep warm. Im still trying to figure out how to put that stove in. see I have a fire place that was blocked off years ago, It was all boxed in. so I have to find someone to see if they can open it, and if not try to figure out where to put the darn thing in order to vent the chimney out side. I have lots on my plate! Being single always had its advantages ( my money my stuff) now I wish I had someone else to help!
The propane one will do good in a pinch, I will have plenty of propane for emergency use as I plan to keep buying until I can no longer buy it. now storing the excess canisters may be a problem once we use them LOL

I did watch that, thats how I got the cool idea. but I can no find this one, and though there is a few on ebay, I figured the heavier one above would hold up better. I do not plan on using liquid fuel in these. I can not loos my house over fuel LOL I thought the video was awesome and I learned so much. I just wish the guy showed us how to vent out the window in detail.

Easy enough...
Get a piece of sheet steel, cut a 4.5" diameter hole in it with a jig saw, run the pipe through and use heat resistant "foil" duct tape to seal any gaps.
Fireplaceguy is an expert on this stuff an may give better tips...

thanks for the help Im hoping to find a good handi man this spring, got lots of work to get done. Not going to tell him anything, but what to do and getting it done.

That is a neat seat up there and i like the idea that you have there..Me that why i went with a undeground home because the area iam in and not haveing to worry about the whole how to heat the place in the winter time..

The Buddy heaters work well, but will only heat a smallish room, and on 'high', one 1lb cannister lasts about three hours. So best is to use high for a half hour or so to get the room heated, then back is down to low or medium. There is a larger model that uses two cannisters, though using the hose connection to a 20 or 40 pound tank would be better.

Been looking into wood heating myself - it's free to gather fall-downs in our local woods, just need the free permit. The local Tractor Supply has one. Just need to figure how to install it with out going through the roof.

I'm curious....what do you heat with NOW when it gets 40 below ?

Also, if looking at wood heat in that kind of environment, I'd avoid those little 'tin can' tent stoves and such, and get a REAL wood stove with secondary combustion, that operate in the 85-90% efficiency range.

Two cords of wood is about 1/2 a winter's fuel for me, and I'm in a lot warmer climate than that. I try to keep 6 cords or more ahead....actually, my goal this year is 12 cords.

Candy You might do yourself very well in looking at centralboiler.com for a wood burning furnace. They make use of hot water radiators to get the heat to you and you can burn everything from cut trees, to pallets, to junk wood from a construction project. Load fuel every 12 hours and you have your heat. at least with that you can stay somewhat warm when it gets 60 below. if you decide against that system I would suggest to at least get you a couple higher quality wood stoves and not use the cheaper outfitter stoves that cabela's sells as those are not meant to use on a consistant basis and a wood burning stove is. One place I suggest to look would be Northern tool...Portable Generators, Heaters + Stoves, Power Tools, Welders | Northern Tool + Equipment.......They have excellant stove for more full time useage during the winter.

IIRC wood stoves, unless they have the correct inserts and shaker grills, have a very tough time burning coal. Incomplete combustion means LOTS of smoke.

True. Woodburners are significantly different from coal burners. You can burn wood in a coal stove, but not necessarily vice versa, at least not safely. Fireplaceguy is the wood and coal stove "go to" for info.

Using those tent heaters for a house stove is not a good idea. Most houses are not as "well ventilated" as a tent, and there is a very real carbon monoxide hazard, and that's forgetting about embers on the floor when raking ash. Since you have already a hot water heating system in the house, the out door burner is a good way to go if you can swing it. For one thing, it can be set up to operate in parallel with your existing furnace, giving you a backup for each.

As I take it, she can not hook up a stove. she rents and there is no way to hook a real stove up in the house ( its government home and there for not legal for wood stoves.

Nope no wood stoves, no other heating. I have to make due and I will do it. That wood stove may not be good in a home, but I plan on putting bricks all around and under it, and I plan to have it in a window.
