really it doesnt matter what you have in the shtf sit. What matter is if you can actually hit something with every singl bullet coming out of the business end of your chosen firearm. can you place that projectile square between the eyes of your adversary ? i don't care what that you got what matters can you kill someone when the time comes...........Can you live with the guilt burning your concious that you have taken the life of another human being? Animals are very differant yes they are living creatures but god put them on this earth for us to eat. But its all in the symantics of taking the soul of a fellow human being no matter wheather they are being animals or not. it trully is a phylisophical question.

I read through about half of the posts and was glad to see so much civil posting with very little debate and bashing thank you members of Survival Monkey.

I have to totally agree with Gray wolf. Situations can change from county to county state to state, etc. I live in west Michigan (lower peninsula) W e dont have any dangerous bears, the Elk herd is way north of me and I dont plan on making war with the army. Dont get me wrong I would fight against UN troops bent on removing our constitution or any other force with that intent. The old rifle behind every blde of grass thing you know?

I have three 30-06 Remmingtons one is an old 740 and two new 7400 models. These are hunting rifles but they do accept a 10 round aftermarket mag. I am currently in the process of buying a sporterized M1 Garand in 30-06. I have an assortment of shotguns and .22 rifles. one 9mm handgun and even an older 32 special win. mod. 94.

For the life of me this question always gets me thinking even after I make a choice Im still looking. W e have tons of small game and deer here and Geese by the thousands land on our lake. There is nothing here I cant take with my 981 T Marlin bolt action .22. Its a tack driver at 50 yards. Head shots on geese at 30 yards is too easy. squirrels? head shots , Rabbits? head shots , Deer? head shots only. The ammo for .22 rifles today is unreal. Sub sonics, longs, shorts, Long rifles , high velocity etc. The weight of the ammo is what would make me carry a .22 if I had to leave my farm and resupply. On the move in the forest I will want far more cartridges then I can carry in any other platform. .22 hands down for (survival) .

The .22 really only comes up lacking in two departments, large dangerous game like Grizzly bears and in a gun fight. On the run I would take my ruger 10-22 with 4 -30 round mags and 1000 rounds. My wife would carry the 981t with another 1000 rounds. W e have carried the rounds and its not bad in the old Vietnam era BELT AND SUSPENDERS. The wife will carry her 9mm Ruger p-89 and I will carry an old 44 magnum red hawk. The .44 will have one box of shell and this is only for defense of large critters. W e have 500 round each of CCI Velocitors and Mini mags. Both are excellent rounds as far as the .22 goes.

If I can stay home and defend my place? it all changes. 30-06, shotguns, AR-15, WILL be delegated to defense only and Ill do all of the hunting with the .22 rifles and my crossbow.

Any way where I live a .22 would be all I would need but that would change just a few hundred miles north. Anyway here is a picture of one of the 7400 rifles with the 10 round magazine. Kept clean they shoot real well. This one kills deer. Lots of them. Kingfish

When you say "gun" I'm thinking you are talking you only get 1. I love my Ar because I know it inside and out, I carried one for Uncle Sam for 28 years... but If i could only have 1, a 10/22 and 3 or 4k rounds are easy to carry in a pack. With good tactics and shot placement, it can procure a larger main combat rifle quickly and quietly.

I have three M1 Garands, none for sale, but I hope you get an original M1 and not the new SA Inc copy. The sights on the Garand are what makes the rifle and the rifleman is what makes it work. With only a few mods on one of mine, I can't think of many things I'd change to sporterize one. I agree on the 7400, don't own one, but we can't legally use rifles in Ohio for deer hunting. I'm also a fan of the Ruger 10/22 for just about everything else, with exception of birds, Rem 870 for those and with the rifled barrel - deer here at home.

That is an option for sure. I would however hate to carry two rifles for any real distance. I tried to carry my 20 gauge 870 in a shoulder scabbard and that was too much crap to carry. But Just bringing the scabbard opens the door to scavenging another rifle. Goop point, thanks.

Im looking at several. The one I want is an older one with a different stock and has had the barrel shortened to like a tanker length. Its a 30-06 which is exactly what I want. I have a good supply of 30-06 rounds. I may decide yet to just get another 7400 or 740 as backup to the other three. The Magazines are usable in any of those models. They just cant take sustained high rates of fire. They are not battle rifles that's for sure but they do double pretty well as a defensive weapon in my case. W e are kind of dug in at our BOL(HOME FARM) on 10 acres with our backs to a small inland lake. W e have the high ground and nice defensive positions should we ever need them. Forts for the grand kids, deer blinds for me but are built from sandbags and covered in brush and branches. We put our food plots out front to draw deer into our property. Those areas are open killing fields in front of our blinds. Anyone coming at us has to come that way unless they can fly. I want a Garrand because they are dependable in high fire situations. I dont think I will ever really need one but better safe than sorry.

I probably shouldnt post this one as I may have it bought out from under me ha ha ha .

Kingfish, be careful of those chopped down Garands, some work great, others aren't worth a crap. A properly built 'tanker' is fine, but a full size regular Garand has no real equal in the battle rifle class, unless it is a real M14 - not the knock-off Chi-Com or M1A. I have a match grade M1A, but when it comes to shooting, the Garand is my favorite. Have you considered the CMP for a real M1 rifle? I don't dare go there anymore, every time I go I bring home another rifle. Great place to load up on 06 ammo too.

I've standardized on rounds, .22 for survival, .380 for concealed carry, purse and pocket, 9mm, .223 and 12 gauge for defensive, and .270 for hunting. In a SHTF scenario, I want to be effective at all ranges.

I bought my first SHTF firearm pre-Y2K, a Ruger mini-14 ranch rifle, because I already owned a shotgun. Since then, I've added pistols in .22, .380, and 9mm and rifles in .22 and .270

I wouldn't pick just one, need them all in a TEOTWAWKI.

1 gun AR style in 308 With fold down sights and good scope
2 guns above plus SW MP in 45cal or 9mm with Crimson trace
3 guns above plus Remington 870 12ga with 2 barrels long smooth and short rifled
4 guns above and AR 15 fold down sights and red/green dot
5 guns above and good 22 rifle with scope
6 guns above and Ruger Mark I - III 22 pistol
7 guns above and good bolt action in 308 prefer with open sights and good scope
8 guns above and a good air rifle with scope
9 add more guns in same calibers for interchangeable ammunition and magazines
It is nice to have a wish list and I have to do with what I allready had and then add to it as I can. As I get older eyes need boost (scopes). If anyone is interested I will be glad to explain my choices logic.

    Talking specifics:
.45 acp 1911 for carry and defense, with Surefire light
.308 AR 10 with tritium scope (good for day and night)
Mossberg 590 with forend light (short barrel for inside use,can shoot many different loads)
Air pellet rifles for small things. These almost cant break
And an arsenal of break barrel 12 gauges (can interchange with Mossberg, these are as reliable as it gets)

Kingfish brings up a good point about being (or not being) around large predators/game. I'm in the AR15 camp (and .40 cal side arms) because it's what I'm best with, abundant supply of ammo, best portability (centerfire), compact and light.

So naturally, in western Montana where I'm at..with bears, wolves, elk, and mountain lions in abundance, I'm thinking my more relevant "environmental choice is going to be an AR in 308! I'd just assume get a 6.8 upper and carry it when in the timberline/mountainside for the big beasts but ammo supply is cost prohibitive and not showing any signs of even modest availability. So a simple DPMS AP4 (16" carbine in 308) and a chest rig stuffed with 20 round mags is the load out when not carrying the ar15. Or better yet...now that my 7 year old has black rifle disease, he can watch my six with papa's ar15:
YouTube - Sam's first day shooting..get's black rifle disease

Just a quick reply to this question. I haven't thought or bought a main weapon yet so I can't answer for now. Though saw it said that if you are shooting on the move you may drop mags. We use a dump pouch. Drop mag, reload another and drop empty into dump pouch. With a little practice you can hit it every time. Unconventional things are what people do not look at. The devil is in the details. Nothing would be worse than having a M4 with thousands of rounds and no mags. A semi would go to a single shot in a heartbeat if you can't keep track of your equipment. Just a ramble for ya.

I don't need sound suppression as I'm either going to be in a firefight or sneaking away to fight another day.

Then there is always my silent but still deadly ball peen hammer of death. It never runs out of ammo.

    Whatever you say.

When you are in a defensive posture and are attacked; what good is a muffler?

They are really overrated for combat purposes and they do have disadvantages. For example, in an ambush the noise (gunfire, explosions etc) adds to the ambushee's confusion. However, you probably already knew that. [clp]
