Bugout or Bugin?

Small cars will get you 40 mpg and can carry a load in the dry. I love bikes intensely but they are impractical for carrying large loads. We are set to bug in but have a virtual "home" in containers set to throw onto a truck and into the camper. The camper is not fancy but dry and comfortable. We have places to go so we will NOT be refugees which ever direction we decide to go--or have to. Our home will be where ever we stop as we will be ready for an indefinite stay where ever it is.

 

Yep, a Bug Out Bike is best as transportation TO a good BOL. Have the gear and supplies already onsite. The dual-sport bike can go places even a 4X4 truck cannot - but off-roading is no place to try carrying heavy loads!
"20 gallons of gas".... sheesh - a six gallon tank gives my KLR a 250 mile range - plenty to get well away from a hurricane situation then refuel.

 

Bugging in

I too will be bugging in but I moved to the area where I live with that in mind.

As to people saying that they will come to you when the shtf Dont sent them away to fast. I have a good friend I would let in either way but even if he had no skills and was not a good friend I would let him in because his wife is a vet. Any medical care is better than none.

 

Skilled folks will be at a premium. Especially if they have supplies. Add first aid, animal surgery, med books, etc. to your library. Even lowly "across the counter" meds will be priceless if needed.

 

Bugging in but...my 02 FLHT gets 40mpg hwy all day long with loaded saddle bags. Add a passenger and I get 35MPG at highway speeds.

 

We would stay here at home and not leave unless we absolutely had to.

Bug in for sure. I've worked to hard for what I have. I will take in all I can, as long as they are sincere about starting a new life. I'm too old to run and nasty enough to fight.

 

I voted Bug Out, but it really depends on the situation at hand. Living so close to Detroit, roving gangs could occur at any time....

There is the distinct possibility that part of California will sink into the sea .
In which case I have boats to transfer my gear into. no kidding.

nothing is beyond the realm of impossibility ,not with all that's been going on.
Looking at the navy's flood map, this gives me a chance better then no chance at all.
There are mountains directly east of me I can move to that have natural lakes and reservoirs and land capable of farming..

 

Okay. I'll say it. I understand the concept "bug out". Can't say, until I just read parts of this thread, that I had ever heard the term, "Bug in" before. Bug in? Stay where you are until you have to leave?

my plan as well, however always have a backup BO plan(IMHO)........between the 4 cars, 1 truck (2 if oldest Son is home), 1 motorcycle, 1 boat, and 3 kayaks we got it covered.......

 

After some serious thought on this, I chose bugging in.

 

We are definitely bugging in on our little farm until someone burns us out. Our home is the bug out place for a few other specially invited people. We have a few other self sufficient neighbors and several hundred acres of woodland. We have the means and abilities to defend it. Bugging out is not an option due to older parents I will need to care for. Our family and friends all have specific skills to contribute. If we have to retreat the neighbors is 1/2 mile through the woods on trails we know. Our nearest city is over 30 miles. There is a small town, don't know pop. But it has one stoplight 8 miles away. Most people in the area are country folk or redneck by city standards but know how to raise their own food. We live down a remote back road up against a mountain. I'm sure that eventually people would show up but hopefully in small groups at a time that a group of ARs could handle and not in the form of an army regiment. We try to be ready for any scenario, but know you can never predict what to be ready for. Just continue to become more and more sufficient each year through planning and prep. My problem will be knowing when to turn people away, my faith causes me to want to help those in need. In an emergency where it is a survival situation, you have to make decisions that you may not like.
