My go to guns would be a SBR AR-15 and a Glock 17 for the sidearm. Both of them use readily available ammo and mags/parts are everywhere.

Hi guys, I train with an AR-15 and in any fight near my home I would carry that rifle. I trust it to fire every time and the accuracy is 2 inches at 100 yards. I have out shot many bolt guns and every AK I have shot against on the firing line. I train with the west Michigan Volunteer Militia as a support unit. I have seen them all on the line. MIA, Garrand, SKS, Mosin, and a whole slew of other rifles. There are many Ar-15 models mine is is a Bushmaster.

However if I had to run from my farm leaving it all behind it would depend on the scenario. If I was driving out I would take My AR,MY 7400 30-06, MY 870,OUR Ruger P-89 hand gun and both .22 rifles. And all of our ammo.

If my wife and I had to bug out on foot this would change radically. I would carry my AR-15 with 500 rounds and my wife would carry my Ruger 10/22 with 1000 rounds. I would also carry the Ruger pistol. That way we would have the two smallest cartridges so we could carry more total rounds. If I was not worried about bad guys we would both carry .22 rifles and about 2500 rounds. I would need lots of room for water purification stuff, tent, bedding and food tablets, vitamins etc. On the run trying to cary a large number of say .308 or 30-06 ,shotgun shells etc is crazy. I did a 5 mile march carrying 200 rounds of 30-06 once. Never again. My battle pack and belt has 6 ammo pouches(vietnam) era m-16 pouches. They hold either two 30 round ar mags or two 10 round mags for my 30-06 Remington 7400 . 360 rounds of .223 or 120 of 30-06 . What would you choose? for me its the Ar every time. But in a survival mode where battle is not the first requirement my bolt action .22 and Ruger 10/22 wouyld be my choice. Kingfish

I agree it will be an AR. My first pick would be my S&W M&P. For my side arm it will be the G19.

Ruger has a new rifle out. I consider it a utility rifle kind of like the mini 14. Small, light, easily carried and 10 round detachable mag makes it a winner in my book. Good for 2 legged and 4 legged critters. The threaded barrel is a plus too.

I know it's not an original concept but it's still pretty cool. It may become my new "mountain" gun for going through the thick stuff although I'm not too keen on scout scopes. Hopefully street price will be somewhere in the 650-700 range as the MSRP is kinda high.

Put a 20" Stainless Barrel on that weapon, and I'll put one in my collection.

I like the style, would rather the spec sheet said the finish was parkerized not matte black, barrel length is a bit on the short side, but I'd not want it to exceed 18" or you would be sacrificing handiness. One other thing I'd like it to say, takes standard M1A or mil-spec M14 box magazines. However, for most folks the 5rd mag would be legal most everywhere, and not make the rifle look like some kind of special purpose sniper rifle. I'm with the impression that this rifle is going to be loud and recoil is going to be an issue. Make that flash suppressor a muzzle brake you could tame the recoil, but it is still going to be loud.

All said and done, I need to find one just to "fondle"[gun]

there was a test done by some of the guys over at thehigherroad.com did gun apparently tested good with little recoil due to that monster recoil pad on the backside. They said they put over 4,000 rounds through one willy-nilly......and sighted it in at 400 yards shot a 30 round group in 3" and the test was done at gunsite. I just read it yesterday and I'm reporting it again today. I am also of the ilk that I would lie to either see it take M1A mags or have magpul get on making high capasity mags for it. As far as the barrel goes I think they are trying to keep it in that scout range of 16-16.50 inches for its ability to work a close quarters situation.
To myself this gun is almost a copy of the venerable M1A....except the one I saw had a walnut stock instead of the black composite stock of your much more expensive M1A scout socom. a muzzle brake would be nice and maybe Arredondo will design one for this rifle.

I watched the video at that link above and while felt recoil might not be that bad, muzzle climb could use some help with replacing that flash suppressor with a muzzle brake. Flash suppression is not that big of a concern except for tactical applications. For my mileage, I would rather keep that muzzle in better control. Slinging the rifle does help as well, didn't look like those guys were using it the way it is intended, maybe I missed something.

I'm about to build a similar rifle from a surplus Mauser receiver and a 7.62 NATO heavy barrel. I have a 20 round replica German fixed-type trench magazine ready for it. The Mauser takes stripper clips for reloading and the British Radway ammo commonly comes that way, I need to test a stripper to see if it fits the Mauser, if not I'll have to get some 8MM strippers and load them with 7.62 NATO. I am considering a 4 x fixed scope with a Doktor reflex optic atop it

I doubt if a single firearm would suffice, and would be inclined to take a variety. However, the one that I would absolutely not leave the house without is my AR-15. My primary sidearm would be a Springfield XD .45, and my backup sidearm would be a Glock 27. If I had the capacity, I would also want to take my Mossberg 500 12 guage pump, my AK-47 as a backup battle rifle and a Mosin Nagant for sniping.

Cathail; I can see taking multiple firearms if I have a permenant encampment and I'm never straying away from that encampment. I personally don't think I would want to haul that much stuff even if I had the room in my bov. Now if I could have a cache of weapons and ammo hidden underground cache under my feet in an expansive vault, yeah that would be fantastic. I myself would love to have a couple barret's for sniping, and long range hunting, a few fulton ar-10's and 15's for defence, a couple 7mm remington 700's, and a dillon aero just for fun and a encampment defensive weapon, and enough ammo to do me for 50 years. But It just isnt going to happen anytime soon But SHTF is. What is needed is one rifle that you would put put trust in to be at the ready to protect yourself and your family and that can be carried easily in an emergency situation. something you can have at the ready at all times. All of what I have said is in my own honest opinion.

  17. My one 'serious social rifle' is an MGI Hydra - an AR platform rifle with interchangeable mag wells. Currently I'm set up to run 5.56 and 7.62 Russian with either US or Warsaw pact magazines. As soon as possible I plan to add the capability to run 5.45 Russian using either AR or AK magazines as well.

as of this moment truthfully, If I had one gun to choose...I would have to go with the a dpms in .308 with either a 16 or 18" barrel, and a decent supply of say 50 magazines.keep 25 full at all times, have 25 for backup, and switch out every month so I dont compress the spring to much. For my sidearm I'd say a S&W M&P 40c. for my ammo the .308 would be stuff I load as with my .40s&w. I guess that is my moment of truth.............untill something better comes around..................

If I had one only, it would be an AR. If I coult take a sidearm also, it would be an XD .45.

I do have a rural objective. If possible, I would take all my firearms and ammo. If not, I would start with the list above.

No one knows when SHTF will happen or how it will come down. Hope I'm ready.

    Disciple,
I would recommend that you don't load and unload your mags every other month. With modern metals the springs will last fully compressed longer than you or I will. Loading and unloading will actually put more wear on them than keeping them loaded.

My choice for weapons: AR15. Preferably with an M-4gery upper for general security use and another upper (or complete weapon) set up with a longer barrel for long range use.

Something in .22 LR. While I love the 10-22, a better option would be to have a rifle with either a pump action or a lever action. More reliable. A single shot or bolt action will also fill the bill.

Pump action 12 gauge. Again good reliability. Have a selection of different types of ammo for security, hunting, etc.

A revolver in .44 mag. Great firepower and reliability. Very comfortable to shoot when loaded with .44 Special without giving up much in a close quarters confrontation.

If I could only have one it would have to be the AR.

    Paul
