Well, I just added 4 new kycrocera 120 watt solar panels to my system. Now, I am rewiring and configuring my entire system. Raceing to beat winter. Just picked up 9 #10 cans of white long grain white rice, and will be back to prepping to bug in again in about two weeks. Did spank them when they were young. No serious trouble with them, but for you young parents out there, the libs will get ya !
For all those of us who are planning to bug in, try and figure out a way to keep your food cold. It will be most important in the summers when it is hot. I will rely on my solar, but prehaps you could dig a 6x6 hole in the back yard, line it with a cement bottom and concrete filled blocks up the sides and about a 2" wood cover with another 2" or more of structal stryo-foam and then maybe another couple of inches of wood. Something like that. Similar to the old ice caves ....
Better yet, dehydrate it so that it doesn't need to be kept cold. Tubers will "keep", as will apples, in just a below ground "root celler". My folks used to "keep" milk for a day or so by lowering the jugs into the well. Butter would thus keep for several days, too.
I live in suburbia near a middle sized town. I know the area and the people and family is here. I don't work so spend my time gardening and preping. Everyone says "if" something happens they will come here. That said I am also preparing my stuff so leaving won't take too long if need be. Isn't that what being prepared it all about anyway?
The plan is to bug in, which may change due to attempts to seize my home. I've measured the windows and have a plan for securing them, with limited funds. I have guns and am buying ammo with each check. I also have four dogs and it would be at last resort to leave, but I would if I had to. I have been creeping around in our attic which extends the length of the house with trap doors on each end and slotted windows (no glass) at each end. I would have to be able to access 2 escapes to be able to use it as a nest for protecting my home from above. The major city is about 12 miles from us (Charlotte). Bugging out, we have friends who live North about 40 miles and they have a large farm and prepared to defend it. Also if we needed to go farther there is family up in the WV mountains which also has farmland and is very rural. I plan for both, mostly bugging out in my head. Dusty
I'm making plans for BI and BO. Don't have any property, so if necessary, I'll ride out of town on my bicycle, and head for the high country!
Bugging in here. Probably be too many travel restrictions to bug out. Wouldn't anyway. Cave about a 1/4 mile away that only family know of. Been stocking it for a few years now. Did some "cosmetic landscaping" so entrance is completely hidden, with a pipe to a nearby spring so has it's own water source. Plans are to hide 10 for two weeks without needing to go outside.
It would depend a lot on the SHTF situation, Probably BI but would depend a lot on how many gang/ Thug types come around. My neighbors are pretty well armed and we all look out for each other. ETA Can't spel
Definitely we are Bugging IN.... No sense going to town, when some of those town folks will be trying to come out here.... Our problem will to be to sort out those that show up......
The problem comes with telling the Bad from the Good... when they are unknown....Mostly we figure to turn them away before they hit the beach... If they are unknowns...
1 st spot is our home in the suburbs i have a set of hurricane window covers, as it get crazy, then it is out to a predesignated location, with more supplies. The crazies will burn you out eventually.
35 miles from a town of any size ,better than 1/4 mile to the nearest neighbor ,I have the high ground . Good well water and my family lives within 10 miles of me and many good friends in the area . I think I'll stay put !!
I'll be bugging in, no reason to go out really, unless our water supply is rendered unusable(we're on city water even though we're a few miles from town, and we're not *allowed* to have our own well). We do have seasonal underground springs on our property that depending on how much snow meltoff there is, can last until July. They feed a creek down a small hill.
Could you have a well dug surreptitiously? How deep is the water table? You may be able to put in a shallow well (better than nothing) or even (if you have the room) a slow sand filtration water pond.
If I can keep busybodies off our place, might be able to do that, the well that is. Not sure about the water table, but the underground springs, turns a big chunk of our yard marshy for quite a while, depending on snow meltoff. Unfortunately just about all our property is visible. My mother keeps saying she's gonna get a 8ft (split)log fence built all around our place if we ever get a bunch of money somehow. The busybody I'm most concerned about is the power company meter reader. When our newest neighbors were building their log cabin, meter reader got pissy because the window over the kitchen sink was right next to power meter, and if I remember right, he didn't like them looking at the meter or something like that, so he made a stink with the county building inspectors or whoever, and they had to get rid of the window. That's another reason I want my own power source, so meter reader will have no reason to come on our property.
Actually should change my answer, I'll be bugging in AFTER I go round up some friends who are on the East Coast. As long as I have around 5 or 6 people, my property is sufficient I think. Of course I hope no one tells my friends I'll be getting them only for slave labor ;-)
