After this thread started, my son and I have been learning to start fires without matches, but using fire steel sparking into a nest of flammable matter. Not quite to the level of the other fire afficianados on this thread, but this was my son's first sucess.....and then we roasted hot dogs as the reward of the success.
+1 to bnmd It's all about learning a new skill and owning it.. That was the first step to many more skills shared and owned etween you and your son !! Well done !!
Yes. It is fun and you don't realize ho great an invention a lighter is until you have no paper and easily flammable materials.
Very well done to your Son and Dad for teaching him alternative methods of firelighting. You can never have enough fire lighting methods under your belt.
I've come to the realization that you could drop me in a pile of dry straw with a case of matches and you wouldn't have to worry about fire damage. ~sigh~
I'm a big fan of using magnesium for fire starting. (having access to a bunch of commercially pure Mg helps with this)
firebug Oh, ya my BOB is fully equipped with a waterproof case filled with matches, tinder, magnesium firestarters, zippo, disposable, etc. I'm not into the rubbing of sticks together for blisters....cause that the end result for me.
Tell him well done. Nice pack too. I use a magnesium stick or magnifying glass on sunny days. I put five Bics in my lady's BOB, [and I keep her away from dry straw]. LOL
