In my other life I was a watch repair teacher. My wife and I have produced a 12 part DivX learning program along with 4 books on the subject. Thing are tough all over, to pay it forward I'll send out up to 6 sets of these learning programs to members here just for the asking. I'll need your US mailing address. Peace Dan
Does it just deal with wrist-type watches or will the information help me repair the chime on my antique clock? Interesting trade. Very nice of you to share.
This series is just wristwatches, and one lesson on quartz clocks. But if you tell me what your problem is, perhaps I can help you with it. Dan
My clock's problem was too much bass . While I was gone one day, apparently the kids had the house rockin' and thumped the clock right onto the floor. I managed to get everything back together and in working order, except the chime spring. It's still in place, but instead of a nice, "Bong" noise, it just goes "kerthunk" (very sad). I'm afraid to touch the spring, proper. Should I be?
That's really nice of you... I've got a couple mechanicals that need some repair... If you still do this type of work... I don't mind sending you some business to help out... I'd be interested in a set... but i'd also like to pay you... Pm me... Thanks,
LOL. Ok, here's what to do: One of the "fingers" on the gong may be out of allignment with the others. Check that first. They should all be parralell or either the wall or the floor of the case. Then, on the striking hammers, make sure they are directly over the gongs, not off the to side. If all that's done and there is still a flat sound check each hammer individually for alignment, and gently bend back each hammer till it gives a clear tone. Let me know how you make out. Dan
Hey I've got a couple Grandfather clocks as well... and a nice old mantle clock... they stopped working years ago... grew up with chimes every 15 minutes and gongs on the hour... used to drive my friends nuts when they slept over :0) Do you work on those as well? Forgot the "coo coo" clock... is that how you spell it... little bird would come out... cool stuff...
Here 'tis. The ceiling in this room is just under 8 feet. With the finials installed, it takes 8-1/2. I've moved since this was taken, but have not reassembled it yet, the case needs a bit of gluing and straightening from the last move. It's been in the family since (as near as we can tell) it was new.
It looks like horology could go back into business with what we've gotten here just today... I need an ETA regulated: http://www.survivalmonkey.com/forum/gear-reviews/18869-marathon-gsar-automatic-watch-review.html

And I got them back yesterday... and they are ALIVE!!!!! All kidding aside.. what a wonderful guy to work with and he sure does know his stuff... I wanted to say a big MAHALO (Thanks) in front of everyone here to Horology... You're a quality guy.... Can't wait to get into that course and start tinkering with my cheapy watches... :0)
Me too, we sent out about 30 sets to people, but if things here are the same as the real world maybe one will do something with it and that's not a bad thing. Dan
