This was a couple of weeks back and I meant to share it then but got destracted so thought id share it now. Most days I go on a walk about but today I wanted to find a nice piece of wood to carve a little bowl out of and I needed to stock up on pine resin so I headed to two areas. The first area was a Willow wood that I haven't visited for a few years and the second was a small pine wood. Some pictures from the journey there. I did a little foreging on the way to the willow wood and enjoyed some wild cherries and blackberries. I only took 1 liter of water as there's a natural spring on the way that I can get a refill from. I used my Hydropal water bottle with survival filter and a purification tablet just to be on the safe side. I got to the Willow woods and they where really over grown with brambles and hawthorn so I had to fight my way in but its all good fun. Some very old fallen Willow here. Cut myself a nice piece of willow with my Swedish pack saw and then split it into two using my Puukko. Swedish pack saw. Then onto the pine wood. I spent about 15 minutes collecting pine resin which was to be found on most of the trees. It then started to rain so I sheltered under a tree and got a brew on using my enamel cup and Swiss army stove. Id made a couple of sandwiches at home to bring with me which went down very well. The rain stopped so it was time to make my way home. The pine resin I had collected Theres enough here to light a few fires or use on a couple of projects. I spent about 4 hours out today and had a very nice day finding the materials I needed plus some quality time with Mother nature.
That bowl of resin reminds me of my brother's cat when it puked on the stairs one day and I slipped on it. Quite a mess. I should have taken pics now that I think of it. I am so lazy. I really need to get out and hike.

That makes me want to get back up north and just enjoy the outdoors, fresh air and lack of city noise and people ( mostly car stereos!) This time I'll be taking along my mini digtal for photos....last time, I took a lot of pics with my cell phone, and we had no way on earth to download them from the phone! A new learning curve!
Bane, your sig line could pertain to the average politician too! Sticks, I like the filter water bottle too! I was once getting wet trying to use a pump-style filter in a creek when camping. My buddy just went up on the bridge over the creek, and dropped his filter bottle into the water, held by a length of paracord. Filled it, the capped and used it to fill our canteens. Quick and simple!

My friend had one of those expensive pump filter and he broke the pump so he ended up sharing my filter and when we got back he ordered a couple and has never looked back. Theres no moving parts to break which is good and very simple to use,simple works for me LOL
Indeed my friend, it is. I have a couple Katadyn Xstream water bottles w/ filters that I keep in the car and truck, I will probably start using one of those on hikes. I picked them up on a clearance rack one day, those things run for $30 usually, and replacement filters cost about the same. I think I paid $12 each for the bottle and filter sets. They only had 2 of them or I would have bought at least 10 --they are that good. After I collect my pine resin, I put the pieces into a coca-cola (or any aluminum soda) can with the top cut off. After I boil my water for tea or coffee I put the coke can on my stove to melt the resin. When cooled and the can is cut away from the newly formed cylinder of resin. It then is a simple matter of cutting the resin block into smaller pieces. Wrapping each piece of resin in wax paper allows me to carry a supply in my fire kit. A few sparks or a small flame and my resin piece starts my next fire. GB
