I went for a good walk in the country yesterday and whilst out and about I wanted to collect some pine resin and cut myself a piece of willow from a fallen tree to make a Kuksa [cup]. I cut the wood using my Swedish pack saw and then split it with my Puukko in the woods to keep the weight down. So today I got to making it using only hand tools I,d have with me if I was in the woods for more than a few days. Well apart from the brass lanyard tube that is I think it needs a little more sanding yet.
That is cool!... got some nice birch burl... was thinking of making me a cup too.... very nice.... great inspiration....
Where are all the bandaids and cuts and scars on your hands? Mine would look like a meat grinder accident by the time I got done carving that!
Thanks bro. Ive been looking for a nice birch burl but Ive not seen any big enough around my stomping grounds, lots of birch just not many burls.
LMAO Ive had my fair share of cuts though but im a little more carefull these days and carry a good first aid kit with butterfly sutures in it as its not good when your camping in the woods and get yourself a good deep cut,I know this as Its happened to me before
Did some more sanding today and treated the wood with peanut oil... Still needs a little more sanding.
I just had to go measure,it holds 4 FL oz,just enough for a strong coffee Peanut oil works in the same way as using linseed oil on a knife handle,it protects the wood, water proofs it,brings out the grain and it user friendly as long as you haven't got a nut allergy.
'Bout half a cup for me. The oil imparts no flavor? There is some maple around here, might have to give it a try.
I like my coffee small but very strong and cannot abide big cups of weak coffee. Not that Ive noticed but there again how strong I have my coffee I doubt Id notice anyway. But I think I would notice the flavour of linseed oil.
