I've hardly handled a shotgun other than "qualifying" in the military and a single grouse a couple years ago , I use a.22 for tree rats, pop cans and the.303 in the deer stand. We had a "meet and greet bbq" with my daughters fiance's family Saturday. Girls went for pedacures, guys wento a sporting clays range. If you get a chance to try it do it, I was afraid we were going to a skeet club where you stand on a block in front of God, the world and 15 club regulars itching to "play through". we had a group of 4 you head down a trail with your group to each station, chambers open, move up into the station, load two, we usually tossed the first couple of birds to see where they flew.(they are remarkably consistent pair to pair.)Then shoulder the gun "call pull" someone in your group pushes the button(hold it down until the second bird comes out): the birds come out as a following pair automatically; and you get 2-3 sets of the same pairs. Score is shots fired; not the birds that hit the bushes so if one comes out outt'a shape or gets away from you you can let it go and call for another.(we did anyway) A full course is 50 shells.I understand good folks shoot 49/50 or better.First time out with a borrowed 20ga 870 I only hit:19 but the other guys hit 25( A 12&16ga.), my daughters fiance' hit 26 with a .410 pump! amazing. Anyway; it couldn't be more beginner friendly: $15.00 a round.( we supplied our own ammunition.) Highly recommended didn't realize shotgunning could be so much fun.
excellent idea for man day. i got 3 sporting clays ranges close to me. i'm gonna drag a couple buddies out with a couple well worded challenges.loser buys lunch or supper after. . i have shot trap (not to bad either) and skeet (less qualified to brag) and also am a sporting clays virgin....
Ghrit are you supposed to start with the gun up? I can see where you would hardly get that advantage in the grouse woods.(?)
No but I have my father's cherry model 90 marlin 12ga over and under 12ga. full and modified. only disadvantage to it is the single non-selective trigger. modified lower barrel always fires first. It is what i shot trap with at 14yrs to 18yrs or so. I requested custody of it after his death. My mother bought it for him when I was 13 (1963) and he hated it. he always favored a side by side. it was a closet queen except when I shot it.
