So what did you put away this week?

Used a 100W the first time and a 150W the second two times with equal results. I also stuck a chef's thermometer in the top of the box to monitor internal temps. It's not the heat that drys it but the airflow and I think that the 100W bulb is actually ample.

Was surprised at how difficult it was to find a 150W bulb.

I'm going to post my marinade in a few hours.

Assuming it isn't eaten up the same day it's made, how long will it keep?
    -At room temp
    -In the reefer
    -Frozen

Frozen and refer I'd guess months or years. Room temp, No idea as it doesn't last long but I'd guess at least 2-4 weeks. I have some under the house in vacuum packed bags and I'll test them at 6 months to see how they look.

A lot depends on how what state of dryness you take them to. Obviously the moister side is going to be more edible but will last less than the break when bent state of dehydration that will last longer.

When we, er the wife, makes jerky, it usually eaten directly off the dehydrator.

Melbo you mentioned pemmican. Have you tried to make any and would this be a way to start?

In the past couple of days, I have managed to put away something few ever do......
    My plans.
Seems there has been a lack of participation and a basic attitude change to where everyone has decided to go their own way....
I made the same decision and will be moving permanently to my land, as soon as I can.

I have not made any yet but the book that I posted here is by the same guy that created this Jerky drying setup. He makes this jerky and then uses it for Pemmican. So yes, a good way to start.

    Pemmican info here:

Put up about 40 lbs of dried Hamburger beef and about 24 lbs of dried peas and carrots. Will be doing another 24 lbs of dried shredded Zuchini tomorrow. I am slowly putting up only dehydrated food.

You will probably start to see a bit of mold after a couple of weeks, if you do just wipe it off with some vinegar on a cloth,or trim the affected parts, its still good.

I have never tried to dry/dehydrate hamburger beef. Well, first time for everything! [booze]

If you dehydrate the ground beef until the completely dry stage it will keep indefinitely. We have dried some and it has been over 2 years and still rehydrates well when covered with boiling water. We use it in Tom & Mac soups and spaghetti. If you want I will send the full instructions.

Another MSR Sweetwater water filter. I only get this brand and model so I don't have to worry about other parts and filters not fitting.

Seven more 12.5 oz cans of baby formula- the newest little one is only a few weeks away.

Another 8oz can of Isopro fuel for the mini camp burner.

We have a nice new thrift store in my little town. I was so impressed the first time I visited it that I return about twice a week. I seldom stop in without making a purchase. A couple of days ago I picked up a complete presto pressure cooker that you can do 5 quarts in at a time. I have two larger ones that do 7 quarts at a time. Paid around $100 for one if I remember correctly. The other one was a gift after a friend died. This 5 quart one was a bargain I could not pass up at $15. I will find it a new nice home where it will be gladly accepted and used. I am only trying to keep the Karma going.... just recently a friend gave me a perfectly good 20 gallon water heater, and 2 elements that may or not fit it. One did, one half hour later I was hooking it up to water and power to check it out. It now is working and providing me with temporary hot water on the new house site while I finish construction on it.

Well, I broke down and bought a "new" used truck to replace my '87 that I can't seem to keep running.

For what it's worth, I got one of these about 9 years ago. Took in on vacation to Mexico so that i could filter the tap water and avoid paying for bottled. Got sick anyway...

Bunch of hand pumps from harbor freight so that I could get fuel and water out of my storage barrels - kinda helpful ;)

A bunch of wood and siding so that I could build a shelter for said barrels while keeping them out of neighbor's view. Don't want the neighbors to see a bunch of 55 gallon drums hanging around.
