Recently I ahd to dump, and re-install windows xp....somehow in the process, I lost the HP's sound. I can watch MVI and WMV, but got nada on youtube.... I went to HP's site and they recommend downloading the driver... Problem: I Don't have a mini-floppy! Suggestions? Thanks!
Conagher will know the details right off the top of his head. While you are waiting for him, there is a way to associate file extensions with the M$ software. I doubt it's a problem with the HP machine, more likely in the software. Poke around in the control panel and see what turns up under sounds. Luck.
I know that you have to do the floppy for the BIOS update, but you should be downloading an .exe file of 3.2 mb for the HP System Software Manager download. That is the only download I can see that might have the audio driver you need. Have you checked the BIOS to make sure that the audio hardware is set to enabled? Are you running XP Pro or Home on that HP dragonfly?
It has XP pro installed, with SP3. The diagnostics system says my "audio card" is missing, but it never had one! Not sure what is going on!
Do a DXDiag (open command prompt type 'dxdiag') and let us know exactly what your system specs are. Laptop or PC?
The unit is a PC, HP's Vectra VL420MT Diagnostics found NO problems, all sounds play...all tests show there is no problem at all... weird or what?
Well I was hoping you could post the device ID and name, along with the system specifics. A lot of sound issues are due to low quality sound chips (AC97 for instance). The dxdiag info will show this info. You can save the data into a .txt and edit out your personal info, then copy and paste here. Your sound card is an integrated Intel AC97 Audio sound card. If your sound is playing for certain apps or file extensions, it might just need to be set as the default sound card for the whole system. It sounds by what you've said in your posts is that it works for some things and not others.
You can usually click on the sound icon in the system tray in the lower right corner of your desktop and then select volume control options or sounds. Then make sure that your speakers that are hooked up to the system are set to be the default sound option. When you right click My Computer either on your desktop or in the start menu, then select Properties. Then select the Hardware Tab and then Device Manager. click the + sign next to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, you should see something referencing the AC97 Audio Sound Card. Or if the driver is not installed correctly, you should see a red X or yellow ! next to the device that has a driver issue. If that is the case, you need to reinstall the driver for the sound card.
All fixed! My son came over, found the files in windows and reset them, somehow they were turned off! (default)... I had no idea how to even find what I was looking for, but he had done it before when a computer was rebooted with windows after having to be f0rmatted... Who knew? Thanks for all the assistance!
