Like bre'r rabbit we have comfortable experienced places where we've been out and feel comfortable being thrown into a "survival situation" What's yours? Where are you comfortable( ready for?) 3 season north American forest?(easiest situation I see here) winter anywhere? mountainous country> 5,000ft? Southern swamps? desert? urban ( yo' mofo!)??? financial country wide or global armageddon? Nuke survial skills? countrywide emp strike Throw me into the 3 season woods farmer john I be fine... "winter" I am inexperienced and under equipped. urban: I am a skeered whiteboy with a bus pass out of my"hood" mountains I think I d be hungry,not my"hood" financial turmoil= "bug in" we're good for" a while...months "depending on food rationing. Once the beans run out???
Southern hammocks, sand hills, swamps, lakes, rivers, and gulf coast. Never starve or freeze. Snakes, gators, and wild hogs have a lot more to fear from me than me from them. Extended almost 2 full crop growing seasons. Lots of rain. NO SNOW!!! NO ICE!!! Yup, I'll bunker up in the woods down here.
Now that's a tough one... I am not happy about cold and snow, yet it has it's advantages over the desert heat....(water!) In the cold you can add a layer of additional clothing...in the desert you can go completly naked and still burn! decisions, decisions, decisions!
This reminds me of a newscast I watched a few years ago. A father in Haiti lived in a small (12'x12') hut with his family of 5 people. The newscaster was making such a fuss about his living in such a small shelter. Then the newscaster went on to describe the life of this man- he would wake up, walk to the river, and fish. He would then bring the fish home for his family to eat. They didn't have to worry about freezing to death. He kept them fed and clothed. About the only thing they had to worry about was the occasional hurricane and the political instability of his country's government. I think he has it better than most of us. Would I rather go to Haiti to live? HELL NO! I'm comfortable where I'm at, including the winter season. I've had my share of almost freezing body parts off quite a few times when growing up. Equiping for winter isn't bad- you just have to stay dry and out of the wind. Easier said than done; winter camping is such a technical sport and heavily dependent on the right equipment.
FREEZIN THE BALLS OFF the 'ol brass monkey up here tonight: Low 6 to 12 below. Winds northwest 8-15. Wind chills to 25 to 35 below at times. I hate real cold; don't do well, my hands get near useless pretty quick...
what do you do about BUGS???? ( eat'em??) We gott em( mosquitos) real bad in the summer woods near any lake( prime camping spots) up here. So any "survival" excursion(or scenario) into the backwoods includes a tent or bug netting of some sort.
. . Actually years and years ago when I let them bother me, I was advised to take a double dosage of vitamin B-12 daily. It seems as if your sweat on the vitamin B-12 is a bug deterent. Worked back then. Now they just don't seem to bother me much. They probably have so many sweet yankees to eat on they just leave me alone now...LOL
Having lived in FL, WI, & TX, I'd take the south any day. I don't really care for fish, but its easier to catch something stupid. You can get use to being hot a lot cheaper than being cold. I remember my commute in WI normally 32 miles each way, taking 30 minutes. During a bad storm it would take over 3 hours.
